The Royal Astronomical Society is seeking a Policy Officer to play a key role in strengthening the future of astronomy, space, and planetary science in the UK.

About the role
Astronomy, space, and planetary science are among the UK’s strongest scientific disciplines, but they face significant challenges, including funding pressures and emerging global issues affecting research delivery.
In this role, you will help develop the evidence and messaging needed to influence policymakers, stakeholders and the wider public. You will contribute to a coordinated public policy approach that strengthens the long term future of these disciplines.
Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, you will work within a small policy team and collaborate closely with internal colleagues and external partners across education, government, industry, and the scientific community.
Key responsibilities
You will play a central role in developing and delivering policy insight and communication by:
- Undertaking research and analysis on the economic, societal, and career value of astronomy, space, and planetary science
- Producing clear, evidence based materials for policymakers, public servants, and wider audiences
- Contributing to the development of a coordinated public policy campaign across the organisation
- Collaborating with internal teams, including policy, outreach, and communications colleagues, to ensure consistent messaging
- Engaging with the RAS Fellowship and key stakeholders to support evidence gathering and advocacy
- Reporting on progress and outputs to senior stakeholders, including RAS Council and advisory groups
About you
We are looking for someone who is passionate about science and its role in society, with strong analytical and communication skills and the confidence to engage a wide range of audiences.
Essential requirements:
- Degree level qualification in astronomy, space science, planetary science, or a related discipline
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly
- Good understanding of the UK policy landscape relating to astronomy and space science
- Experience of, or the ability to undertake, research and policy analysis and communicate findings effectively to non specialist audiences
- Ability to take initiative and work both independently and collaboratively across a range of stakeholders
- Ability to engage effectively with a variety of audiences, supported by an understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion principles
- Eligibility to work in the UK
Desirable experience:
- Experience working with learned societies, membership organisations, or similar institutions
- Experience in campaigning, advocacy, or policy influencing activity
